VAMANA

Vamana is a classical Ayurvedic detoxification procedure designed to cleanse the upper part of the body, particularly the respiratory and digestive systems, through medically-induced therapeutic vomiting. It is one of the five main therapies in Panchakarma, aimed at expelling excess Kapha dosha—the bio-element responsible for mucus, congestion, and sluggishness—from the body. This treatment targets the areas above the diaphragm, including the lungs, nasal passages, throat, and sinuses. The procedure begins with internal oleation and snehapana (consumption of medicated ghee), followed by external abhyanga (oil massage) and swedana (steam therapy) to mobilize toxins. Specific emetic herbs are then administered to initiate the vomiting process in a controlled and supervised manner.

The primary goal of Vamana is to restore doshic balance and improve the functioning of the body's natural detox mechanisms. It is particularly effective in managing conditions related to excess Kapha, such as asthma, bronchitis, chronic sinusitis, and other respiratory tract infections. Additionally, it has shown significant benefits in improving digestion, enhancing appetite, and treating various skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. By clearing the accumulated toxins and phlegm from the system, Vamana promotes mental clarity, boosts metabolism, and helps re-establish the harmony between body, mind, and spirit in line with Ayurvedic principles.
